L'Anse-Saint-Jean fully deserves to be part of the Most Beautiful Villages of Quebec Association. Nestled in the heart of a valley and offering a splendid view on the fjord, the village of L'Anse-Saint-Jean invites visitors to stop by and admire the view. It is the only village located so close to the fjord on the South shore.
Father Beaulieu was the first one to settle in this area in the 1660s, until the Society of Twenty-One used the village as their headquarters. For several years, people here exploited the forest, made maple syrup, and lived off salmon fishing. Over the years, the small village was unfortunately victim of great catastrophes, like the 1865 famine, the fires, the Spanish Influenza, the rock falls and the floods, including the 1996 flood. This last flood destroyed 102 houses, completely or in part.
During your visit of the village, you can, of course, admire the view from the belvederes, but also go on a sea kayak excursion, go hiking, horseback riding, fishing, sailing, or ice fishing and cross-country skiing in winter. The 1929 covered bridge located in the village was destroyed twice by the river. For nearly 40 years, it was on the Canadian 1,000 dollar bills. Do not forget to take your time during your visit to take in the view offered by the fjord as well as the calm and serene atmosphere of the village.
